THE SECRET LIFE OF 'ICE PLANT'

Taken from upcoming album First Taste

Ty Segall presents "Ice Plant", his most beautiful song to date, as the final pre-release single from his forthcoming album, First Taste, due August 2nd via Drag City. "Ice Plant" presents a completely different side of First Taste following the previously released full band, fleshed-out singles "Radio" and "Taste." Between a percussion-based intro and simple piano outro, both performed by Segall, "Ice Plant" strips back any instrumentation, solely spotlighting the mesmeric voices and harmonizing of Segall and newest Freedom Band member, Shannon Lay. Segall's voice is arresting as he sings "Let your love rain down on me || Let your love rain down on me . . ."

"'Ice Plant' is a fever dream reflection of my childhood. . . A past no more. Was very fun to sing with the amazing Shannon Lay," comments Segall. "My neighborhood in Laguna Beach was and still is covered in Ice Plants and Eucalyptus trees that would fall on our family's car and stain the paint job. One winter we tried to surf down the Ice Plant hills."

Ty Segall and the Freedom Band's First Taste residency tour begins this Friday at Los Angeles' Teragram Ballroom (they will perform there every Friday from July 26-Sep. 27). From Oct. 1 - 5, the residency will relocate to New York's Warsaw, before heading overseas. During these residencies, Segall and the Freedom Band will play First Taste in full, alongside select albums from Segall's expansive catalogue, including Melted, Emotional Mugger, Manipulator, and Goodbye Bread.

First Taste is an introspective set after the extroversions of 2018's Freedom's Goblin. Written and recorded using koto, recorder, bouzouki, harmonizer, mandolin, saxophones and brass, voices, a sprinkling of keys, and dual drummers (Segall on the left, Moothart on the right), these twelve songs form a tightly revolving cycle of sound and song. Throughout, Segall reflects on family, re-encountering pasts, anticipating futures, and hits on oneness, self-esteem and the parents, while reaching outward, feeling for a shared pulse in the world around him.

Ty Segall will play Patronaat in Haarlem:
17th Oct - First Taste + Melted
28th Oct - First Taste + Manipulator
