Sarah Klang’s anticipated new album Mercedes has finally arrived. With this album, the Swedish alt-pop singer/songwriter leaves her twenties behind and navigates the mental and emotional journey of becoming a first-time mother to her daughter Mercedes, for whom the album is named. The profound experience became the catalyst for a new cycle of songs grounded in personal yet commonly shared human experiences. Sarah delivers these songs with the steam-of-conscious storytelling style that has endeared her to so many, but now with more candor.
“Embracing motherhood and making peace with her twenties helped Sarah Klang to make some of the best music of her career so far.” - The Line of Best Fit
“Sarah has begun a new chapter in her life and music, and we are here for it.” - Wonderland
“Klang settles into a spacious groove, coloring the track with meditative synth beds and sweet, honeyed harmonies.” – Under The Radar
From the synth-driven title track 'Mercedes' that radiates with optimism for her daughter’s future to reflections on her past life as she comes to terms with her future on the American-tinged stand-out 'Belly Shots' to reckoning with being bullied as a child with the gut-wrenching, guitar-driven 'Halloween Costume' to the moment she met her daughter on the hopeful, vintage pop-laced 'Magic Stone,' Mercedes takes the listener on a roller coaster of emotions as Sarah effortlessly blends her many musical influences to create a sound uniquely her own.
Klang says, “I’ve learned a lot about myself making this album. Like how, since my teenage years, I’ve always made music to process what’s happening to me in a way I never realized.” She adds, “This is definitely my coming-of-age period. I hope the songs will resonate and that it’s something my daughter can maybe one day listen to. Maybe it will help her, and other young girls too, giving them strength. This album is all about being kinder to your younger self, of forgiving yourself, and moving strongly into the future, with pride.”
Leading to the album’s release, Sarah has also shared some of these vulnerable moments through her compelling music videos, which are presented as mini-films. Watch below.
Klang has always had a talent for autobiographical songwriting, like on her acclaimed debut 'Love in The Milky Way' (2018), which won Best Album at the Swedish Grammis Awards. It continued on 'Creamy Blue' (2019), her second album that earned another nomination for ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Alternative Pop’ at the Grammis Awards, and another nod for ‘European Album Of The Year’ at the IMPALA Awards. While her sound had previously touched upon a mix of influences, 2021’s 'VIRGO' - her most well-received album to date - then broadened her scope to include elements of ‘80s synth-pop (again winning a Swedish Grammy for Best Alternative Pop). Tastemaker praise followed, notably from i-D, Rolling Stone, and Clash.
