Jarle Skavhellen returns with tender new single 'Home By 5'
8 November 2019
His forthcoming EP will be out sometime next year
Rising Norwegian singer-songwriter Jarle Skavhellen is back with a brand new single titled ‘Home By 5’, a quiet calm hymn to the everyday life of a working man reassuring he’ll be home by 5. It’s a song truly full of genuine warmth for the Autumn weather.
From writing songs alone in his bedroom in Bergen to recording new music in Portland with the legendary producer of My Morning Jacket and The Decemberists. This is the story of Jarle Skavhellen from 2016 to 2019.
The young Norwegian musician showed up, seemingly out of the blue with the gorgeous song ‘The Ghost In Your Smile’ in 2016. His timeless folk sound cut through all the algorithms, made it to all the right streaming playlists, and in a short time the song generated millions of streams and attention from music lovers around the world.
Skavhellen signed to International label Nettwerk, who then released his stunning debut album, also titled The Ghost In Your Smile in 2018. The record made waves with international music press, Clash calling him “a truly timeless songwriter.” Jarle was named one of the most exciting new artists to come out of the country by major Norwegian newspaper, Dagbladet.
“When time came to begin planning my second album, my label asked me who I wanted to work with. I was listening a lot to Gregory Alan Isakov’s album Evening Machines at the time, and really loved how that sounded,”Jarle explains.
Nettwerk reached out to the legendary Tucker Martine (My Moning Jacket, The Decemberists) who was both impressed and excited about Jarle’s songs. So, he cleared space in his calendar, and Jarle made it over to his MC Club turned recording studio in Portland, Oregon and recorded a handful of new songs over an intensive and inspiring period. “My initial plan was to record my next album live and stripped down, but as soon as we got started in the studio, it was hard to hold back. Looking back now, I’m really glad we didn’t,” continues Jarle.
Skavhellen’s songs and voice has kept its unique personality, but the new material has a warmer and more organic sound. The production this time is larger and fuller, yet spacious, like the first new single ‘Home By 5’.
‘Home by 5’ is taken from a forthcoming EP, out sometime next year.
