Elin Ruth Sigvardsson was born on a cold winters day, in a small town called Mönsterås, located by the windy Swedish east coast. The year was 1981, and it wouldn’t take long until she wrote her first song. A song that lyrically mainly contained notes about the weather changes and different words for poop. At the age of four, she started to play classical piano in Suzuki school, where she developed her talent for playing by ear. As the years past, she became a headstrong and naive teenager who one day decided to snatch a spanish guitar from her fathers home studio, spray paint it red, and learn enough chords to be able to write a proper pop song with associated sad teen lyrics. There, alone in her room, her songwriting started to take off for real, and she found a new playground in Music world where she could go when the real world wasn’t fun enough . This world turned out to be a place she constantly keeps revisiting.
Today she’s 28 years old, 6 feet tall, passionate about owls, accents, red lipstick, high heels, tattoos, psychology, humor, old pianos, cooking for friends, old houses with towers, feminists, beer, Bob Dylan, stars, the sea, good storytellers and season changes. She still doesn’t no much about notes or music theory, but keeps playing by ear and is deeply in love with music.
- Her country rock-tinged debut album Saturday Light Naive (2003) was produced by Lasse Winnerbäck, one of Sweden's biggest rock artists. Critics and audience alike agreed that the 21 years young singer, guitarist and songwriter Elin had emerged a fully-formed artist. The debut album spawned four nationwide radio hits, two Swedish Grammy nominations, great reviews and a prize for Newcomer of the Year by The Swedish Music Publishers Association.
- The follow-up, Smithereens, was recorded during a short but intense period and went straight to number one in the Swedish album sales chart.
- In 2008 Elin released her third album, A Fiction. She joined the heavyweights with her natural authority & sincerity on this concept album. After that Elin spent a lot of time touring.
- During the spring of 2009 she quit the co-work with Bolero Records/Warner Music, and started her own record label, Divers Avenue Music. She recorded her fourth album, Cookatoo Friends, with herself as producer and main musician, and Rolf Klinth as engineer. Cookatoo Friends received brilliant reviews & the first single, Love (feat. Lars Eriksson), went straight up to #5 on Swedish
hit chart & stayed on highest radio rotation during the whole summer. The second single, Bang, became a instant hit on Sweden’s biggest national radio station, P4.
Elin about the new album, Cookatoo Friends:
Musically “Cookatoo Friends” is fuzzy and playful and contains more humor than before. I haven’t forced this album into one specific genre but let my songs take off in their own direction. I initially intended to record the entire album with a live band, but ended up playing most of the instruments myself, in order to keep as much of the demo feel as possible. It felt uncomfortable at first, but I discovered that it was a very fun and way to work. I’m not an instrumentalist, but I can still make the instruments sound, and that itself has created a different sound compared to my previous albums. I also feel more grounded now and have gone deeper into my own expression.
Some of the tracks though, were recorded live, with Magnus Olsson on drums, Calle Ekerstam on guitar and Markus Lundgren on bass. Ane Brun, Lars Eriksson, Edith Backlund, A Beautiful Friend among others appeared on vocals.
